Laura Wexler is Professor of American Studies, Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Director of The Photographic Memory Workshop at Yale. Former Chair of the Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program and Co-chair of the Yale Women Faculty Forum, she is the author of numerous articles and scholarly volumes about American photography and visual culture. These include Pregnant Pictures, co-written with Sandra Matthews; Interpretation and the Holocaust, co-edited with Laura Frost, Amy Hungerford and John Mackay, and Tender Violence; Domestic Visions in an Age of U. S. Imperialism, which won the Joan Kelley Memorial Prize of the American Historical Association. She recently completed essays on Frederick Douglass and photography, and on Puritanism and photography, and is now at work on a monograph about race and American visual culture entitled The Awakening of Cultural Memory: Mapping Kate Chopin, as well as a collection of essays entitled The Look, The Gaze and the Relay Race: Photography and Everyday Memory.
