While there is some debate about who the actual architects were (either João Batista da Costa or Martin and Porphyrio), it was one of the first and remains arguably the most prominent example of the Afro-Brazilian mosques in Nigeria. It was one of the very first mosques to be built out of non-perishable materials in the city.
