Meredith Gamer is Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University, where she specializes in the visual and material culture of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe, with a focus on Britain and the British empire. Her research centers on the visual cultures of punishment and medicine, particularly as they relate to matters of class, gender, and race.
Gamer’s first book project, The Sheriff’s Picture Frame: Art and Execution in Eighteenth-Century Britain, explores the relationship between the visual arts and the spectacle of public execution in Georgian Britain. As a MERA Fellow, she is pursuing research toward a second book-length project, which centers on the production, transmission, and translation of obstetric illustration in and between eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Britain and colonial North America.
